I’m an accidental banker.
Hi, my name is Kira Johnston-Owens. I'm a small business banking specialist in Kansas City, and I have been a Commerce Bank employee for 15 years. I am an accidental banker. I started out in theater and got a banking job to pay for my theater career and never left it.
The thing I love about working for Commerce is they do empower us to be able to take care of our customers. That's what keeps me in banking is that I love to connect with people, and I get to do that with my internal customers and my external customers, and I get to take care of them in a way that is truly genuine and in a connective manner that allows them to continue to feel like people and not just a number. I think one of the things I've learned, especially over the last couple of years is that you can find compensation, you can find benefits anywhere. You can challenge competitor employers for those verticals. But at Commerce, there is such a culture behind what we do as employees for both our customers, for each other, and for our community. I don't know that you can find that same culture anywhere else. I've developed so many relationships over the years, and I can literally walk into any branch and I have friends. Anytime I want to learn something new, grow into something new, chase a new opportunity to learn, I have a team that supports me and allows me to do those things in my job.
If you're looking for a company with a true culture that is lived every day by every employee, this is the place for you. If you're looking for an organization where you feel like you can grow, that promotes from within, that constantly is offering up opportunities to develop and become as big as you want to be, Commerce Bank is the place to work.
